1990 Chateau Clinet, Pomerol 12x75cl

Chateau Clinet

Case Format: 75cl

Max score: 96

Modest in size, Château Clinet has still managed to shoot to prominence, establishing itself as one of the most famous wine producers in the Pomerol appellation. During the 1980s, the esteemed oenologist Michel Rolland was enlisted to help reinvent the vineyard’s operations. By introducing a much later harvest to guarantee super-ripe fruit, as well as elongating the time spent in the oak barriques, it only a took a matter of years before Clinet was being compared to the big guns Pétrus, Lafleur and Le Pin. The result? A concentrated, bountiful wine with seemingly infinite length. Whilst very drinkable when young, it’s best enjoyed over a ten-year period. A standard Château Clinet blend comprises Merlot (c.88%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (c.12%).

Very good deep medium color. Compelling nose combines caramel, clove, smoke, black raspberry and a floral nuance. Very concentrated and rich, but sound acids and strong extract give this wine lovely shape and firmness in the mouth. Impressively long finish. While the '90 Clinet can't match the '89 for density, its balance and freshness will make for a delicious drink.

Tasted at Roberson's Pomerol tasting. The exquisite Clinet '90 has a lovely rounded, gourmand bouquet, quite meaty and savoury, a touch of garrigues going on here, a little oxtail and Bovril, vibrant and completely seductive. A quintessential Pomerol '90 bouquet. The palate is medium-bodied with a lovely rounded, quite voluptuous texture, tight at first but unwinding nicely. Very focused, very well defined with just a touch of spice and cloves on the finish. Drink now-2020. Tasted November 2010.

Very dark crimson with a rust rim. Sweet, menthol nose. Dusty nose - fruit is fading but there are very firm tannins on the finish too. Not especially gracious but it has survived well. Thick, heavy.
