A last minute addition to the lineup, Domaine de la Romanee-Conti s 2005 Romanee Saint-Vivant opens with the most extraordinary, alluring bouquet imaginable. Silky, nuanced and super-polished on the palate, with exceptional purity, the 2005 simply soars out of the glass. The classic weightlessness of RSV comes through loud and clear. Bright saline notes give the 2005 a closing kick of freshness. The 2005 is a very pretty wine, although the profoundness of the aromatics doesn t fully follow through to the palate, where the wine is a bit slender, especially compared to what follows in this flight. I ve had better bottles of the 2005.

A deep crimson colour with ruby rim. The nose if tight at first with raspberry, cranberry, a touch of dried blood and sous-bois. Very complex, but introverted and taking its time, reluctantly revealing chalk and a touch of talcum. The palate is medium-bodied but do not be fooled, this is an immensely powerful Romanee-Saint-Vivant. Quite firm tannins, perhaps more masculine and a little more austere than usual. Again wonderful focus with both red and dark cherries, raspberry leaf, a touch of fresh tobacco and smoke towards the long, satin-textured finish. Tasted February 2008.

Bright cherry red. Full and complex already - actually rather rustic in a way, in a wild, super-natural way. Truly glorious bitter cherry fruit on the front palate and then polished tannins and just lovely energy. Totally pure with real bite at the end. You could drink this now actually! Utterly transparent and very long and neat. Really readable. And so amazingly persistent. A several-minute (of finish) wine. Dangerously drinkable already.
