2008 Chateau Pape Clement Cru Classe, Pessac-Leognan 6x75cl

Château Pape Clément has one of the oldest documented histories of any estate in Bordeaux, with evidence of vines being planted as far back as 1300. The estate has been under the ownership of the Montagne family since 1939. A shift in quality was noted in 1985 when Bernard Magrez was appointed general manager. Since then, Château Pape Clément has grown on a steep upward trajectory, creating some of the finest wines in Pessac-Léognan, therefore living up to its Cru Classés de Graves status. Its 32 hectares are planted with Cabernet Sauvignon (c.60%) and Merlot (c.40%) on a terroir of gravel, clay, small rocks and sandy soils. The wine is aged in 65% new French oak for 18-20 months before bottling. The result is a rich, luscious wine that contains an intense concentration of fruit.

The 2008 Pape Clement has a perfumed bouquet with blackberry, boysenberry, pencil lead and black olive scents, just a subtle estuarine element coming through with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit, a fine bead of acidity, quite dense and muscular but retaining delineation. My one quibble is that the oak just feels a little too conspicuous towards the finish, so give it another 4 to 5 years. (Tasted at the chateau and at BI Wine & Spirit s annual vertical tasting.)

Tasted ex-chateau and single blind in Southwold. The Pape-Clement 2008 is noticeably deeper in colour than its peers. The nose is well defined with crisp blackberry, black olive and a touch of warm gravel. The palate is well balanced with quite racy acidity, although the finish has a tininess to it that will hopefully disappear with time (although it caused me to be more parsimonious with my score.) Tasted January 2012.

Light and fresh on the nose. Sweet and rich and rather burgundian. Floral notes. Long. Not flashy but very pleasing. Sweet finish.
