Chateau Malescot St. Exupery

Case Format: 75cl

Max score: NR

Château Malescot Saint Exupery’s history can be traced all the way back to 1616, and since then it has been seized during the French Revolution, and confiscated after auction during World War I. Today the third growth estate is run by the Zuger family who continue to make wines under the lead of Michel Rolland. Its 30-hectare vineyard comprises Cabernet Sauvignon (c.50%), Merlot (c.35%), Cabernet Franc (c.10%) and Petit Verdot (c.5%) and sits on a terroir of gravel, chalk and clay soils with iron deposits. The wine is aged in 80-100% new French oak for 14-16 months. When young its grand vin is light and supple, but after a few years of bottle ageing it opens up to reveal both a silky, supple texture and gorgeous perfume.

The 2009 Malescot St. Exupery has such a sweet and honeyed bouquet, more McClaren Vale Shiraz than Margaux! The palate is sweet on the entry, huge extraction here, honeyed in style with a rather cloying finish. I am not sure what to make of this bottle because I have encountered marvelous examples in the past. I will re-taste and defer judgement for now. Tasted blind at Farr Vintners 2009 Bordeaux tasting.

Served blind at the Southwold 2009 tasting. The Malescot-St-Exupery '09 is unruly at first, but it settles down nicely to become a well behaved pupil: boysenberry, lifted cassis and violet aromas all very clean and well defined, the oak subtly enmeshed. The palate is medium-bodied with a succulent entry. Lovely ripe, filigree tannins and a lovely elegant caressing finish make this an excellent Margaux. Tasted January 2013.

Tasted blind. Mid crimson. Just the right side of volatile but very winning and opulent. More 2009 than Margaux. A little dry and chewy for the moment. Massive volume and finish.
