The 2010 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Vigna Ferrovia is deep, dense and quite attractive. A host of intense savory, ferrous notes hit the palate first, followed by dark red cherry, plum, smoke, leather and licorice. The Riserva is powerful and imposing, with big tannins from the super-extracted fermentation, but it also has plenty of personality. The Riserva will be even better in a few years, once the tannins have softened further.

The 2010 Brunello di Montalcino Pian delle Vigne is a well-built wine that shows the muscular side of this celebrated star of Tuscan winemaking. The Brunello opens to a thick, dark appearance with shapely aromas of dark cherry, plum, blackberry, leather dark chocolate and spice. The winemaking is impeccable, if rather stylized in terms of oak and fruit maturity. The aim here is to produce a wine the oozes softness and richness and this goal has been abundantly achieved. Pian delle Vigne is a Brunello that will excel in both the near and long term.

Tasted blind. Impenetrable, almost blackish ruby with narrow orange rim. Rich with a hint of fruit cake on the nose. Very ripe and dense and loaded with tannins. (WS)
