CRITIC REVIEWS

The 2014 Lascombes has a very fruit-driven, slightly overripe nose with mulberry, leather and truffle scents. Maybe picked a bit too late? The palate is medium-bodied with dryish tannins. It's a tad scrawny with a soupy finish that doesn't tempt you back. This is a very underwhelming showing. Tasted blind at the Southwold 10-Year-On tasting.

The 2014 Lascombes was perplexing when I tasted it multiple times from barrel. Now in bottle, it has a generous, warm bouquet with chestnut-tinged black fruit, hints of cedar filtering through with time. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, smooth in texture with ample blackberry and blueberry fruit, although my main criticism is lack of detail and delineation on the finish. Ergo, you don't feel enthused about returning for another sip.

Sweet blackcurrant fruit. Chalky texture, a little bit lean in the middle but just in balance and likely to become more elegant with time. (JH)
