2015 Chateau Pichon Baron 2eme Cru Classe, Pauillac 3x150cl

Chateau Pichon Baron

Case Format: 150cl

Max score: 97

Back in 1987, the insurance company AXA decided to enter the wine business and purchased Château Pichon Baron which was in need of investment. AXA saw the outstanding potential of the property and realised that it was an opportunity too good to miss. The Château was restored, machine-harvesting was ended, and over the years the size of the vineyards has been increased. More importantly, quality has improved swiftly, and now once again truly excellent wines are being produced - even in tougher vintages. Under the direction of Christian Seely, quality has never been higher than it is today, partly thanks to ever more rigorous selection in the vineyard.

The 2015 Pichon-Baron has an engaging, complex bouquet of blackberry, cedar, mint and graphite, demonstrating more cohesion and more conviction than its peers. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin and extremely well-judged acidity that imbues this Pauillac with a sense of effortlessness and class lacking in some of its peers. A stunning 2015 and one of the greatest releases from the estate. Tasted blind at the Southwold 2015 Bordeaux tasting.

"Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, the 2015 Pichon-Longueville Baron is enticingly scented of chocolate-covered cherries, crushed red currants and mulberries with touches of baking spices, potpourri and bay leaves plus a hint of fallen leaves. Sumptuously elegant, refreshing and medium-bodied with gorgeous, expressive, perfumed red fruits and very fine, very firm tannins, it has a persistent, perfumed finish. Its remarkable intensity, freshness and very firm frame suggest a long-lived Pichon Baron, which should cellar gracefully for 30+ years."

Very deep crimson with ageing only at the rim. Really very sophisticated and layered. Cassis top note but very dry underneath and conforms to the red bordeaux top-notch stereotype. But is it better than Don Melchor 2017? I'm not sure at all! Pretty austere relative to the Chilean but admirable in a Bordeaux context.
