2016 Chateau Palmer 3eme Cru Classe, Margaux 1x75cl

Chateau Palmer

Case Format: 75cl

Alter Ego is a stunning wine from one of Margaux’s leading estates, Château Palmer. Creating some of the best wines in all of Bordeaux, Château Palmer often rivals the outstanding wines of their illustrious neighbours. The first Alter Ego made its debut in 1998 after the purchasing of 8 additional hectares for the Palmer estate. This wine comes from different plots to Palmer, and therefore is not viewed as second wine. Alter Ego is aged in 25-40% new French oak for 16-18 months. This supple wine is characterised by its fresh fruit, crispness, and rich intensity that all takes shape the moment it leaves the barrel.

The 2016 Palmer is a brilliant wine from Thomas Duroux, though I feel it will ultimately be surpassed by the 2018. You cannot argue with the nose: intense black cherries and raspberry fruit, crushed violets and creme de cassis (as if there was a touch of Pauillac in there). The palate is medium-bodied with fleshy, sensual tannins, perfect acidity, velvet smooth with layers of chocolate-tinged black fruit, hints of black pepper and cedar towards the sustained finish. It is a fabulous Palmer that will give much pleasure. Tasted at the Palmer vertical at the chateau.

The 2016 Palmer is a blend of 47% Merlot, 47% Cabernet Sauvignon and 6% Petit Verdot. Opaque garnet-purple colored, it slowly glides out of the glass with compelling notes of blueberry compote, warm cassis and kirsch with emerging hints of violets, cigar box, black tea, sandalwood and Sichuan pepper. Medium to full-bodied, wonderfully rich, concentrated and packed with latent energy, the palate literally grows in the mouth, revealing layer upon layer of black, blue and red fruits and tons of floral sparks, framed by super ripe, incredibly fine-grained tannins and finishing with epic length. It's a wine that makes you wanna drape yourself languidly over a chaise lounge, glass of Palmer in hand, sighing with deep satisfaction, aa oeThis is so wonderfully Palmer."

47% Merlot. Biodynamic. Tasted blind. Dark crimson. Slightly sweaty nose. Then thick and sweet and utterly charming and super-attractive texture. Fresh finish and the tannins are virtually subsumed in this glorious fruit. Kerpow! Great length. Heady, rich, very dramatic and lively. Complete. A contentious wine because of the concentration?
