2017 Domaine de la Chapelle (Paul Jaboulet Aine), Hermitage, La Chapelle Rouge 6x75cl

Paul Jaboulet Aine

Case Format: 75cl

Max score: 98

Paul Jaboulet Aine is one of the most iconic names in the world of wine. La Chapelle is famed as being one of the finest red wines in the market. Grown on the hillside of Hermitage, La Chapelle is named after a tiny chapel built by the knight Gaspard de Stérimberg in 1235 and the vines he planted there after his return from the Crusades. Founded in 1834 by Antoine Jaboulet (Paul was one of his sons), it was Paul’s son, Louis, and grandson, Gérard, who can be heralded among the great ambassadors for the both the region and the négociant. In 2006, the Freys took over Paul Jaboulet Aine. Their head winemaker, Caroline Frey, shifted the estate towards sustainable farming, which saw them achieve organic status in 2016. Hermitage La Chapelle rouge comprises 100% Syrah, and is full bodied with both rounded tannins and an almost savoury flavour.

Brilliant magenta. A highly complex bouquet evokes ripe dark berries, cherry liqueur, incense and potpourri, while olive and exotic spice nuances build in the glass. Displays intense, alluringly sweet black/blue fruit, spicecake and violet pastille flavors that show sharp delineation and are braced by a spine of juicy acidity. Closes extremely long and precise, displaying a smoky, intensifying mineral quality and youthfully gripping tannins that build steadily.

The 2017 Hermitage La Chapelle comes from the firm's vineyards on the western half of the Hermitage slope, primarily Le Meal, but with substantial contributions from Les Rocoules and Les Bessards. Classic notes of cassis, black olives, mocha and roasted meat are joined by hints of baking spices in a wine that's full-bodied, deep, dense and rich, with a velvety texture and a lingering finish. It's lower in alcohol than the 2018, less voluptuous and maybe just a step behind that monumental wine, but it's still a serious collectible with three decades of evolution ahead of it.

Rich, cooked fruit on the nose. More convincing tannic heft than their Maison Bleue, but pretty tame in terms of complexity at this early stage. (RH)
