The 2017 Promontory is vibrant, focused and bristling with energy. Bright red-toned fruit, spice, crushed rocks and flowers convey energy, with floral notes that continue to open with aeration. This is an especially mid-weight, nervous vintage for Promontory, and yet all the elements are so well balanced. The 2017 is going to be a spectacular wine, in a number of years. This is one of its best showings.

Cask sample. To be bottled summer 2020. Fires year. Brought about 70% of the fruit in before the fires in early October. Had to reject the rest for fear of smoke taint. Small crop therefore. Cooled down with fog etc late season with grape sugars reduced by 3-4 Brix before they slowly rose again. (Normal harvest is the third week of September to mid October. Typical Brix 23-24.) Big and round. Massively ripe fruit deceptively initially distracts from the tannins. Dry finish. Still sinewy on the finish. Vital and energetic, though there is really intense sweetness at first.
