2019 La Dame de Montrose, Saint-Estephe 6x75cl

Chateau Montrose

Case Format: 75cl

Max score: 92

Drink To: 2026-2055

Known for its powerful, full-bodied claret, Château Montrose has continued to create acclaimed wines for the past couple of centuries. Only 800 metres from the Gironde estuary, Montrose benefits from an excellent microclimate that protects the vineyards against the frost. Their terroir comprises deep clay-gravel soils which enables the vines – which comprise Cabernet Sauvignon (c.60%), Merlot (c.32%), Cabernet Franc (c.6%) and Petit Verdot (c.2%) – to thrive. The resulting wine is one that is powerful and refined, yet elegant and complex. Firm and tannic, Montrose has superb ageing potential that with bottle maturation will continue to develop into a sublime and poetic claret.

The 2019 La Dame de Montrose has an open, fresh and energetic nose with blackberry and cedar scents, joined by black pepper and graphite with time. You might describe it as a "strapping" bouquet. The palate is medium-bodied with graphite-infused black fruit, pliant tannins, edgy with a persistent and satisfying finish. This is very promising and quite sophisticated - a Deuxieme Vin that has improved since bottling. Tasted blind at the Southwold annual tasting.

48% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, 4% Petit Verdot. Barrel sample. Cabernet expression particularly marked, especially on the palate. Dark fruit with a savoury edge on the nose, the palate lively and lifted with fresher flavours. Dark fruit again with a minerally edge. Firm, dry finish. GV? (JL)
