Chateau Belair-Monange

Case Format: 75cl

Max score: 97

Drink To: 2032-2070

The vineyards of Bélair-Monange now occupy some of the choicest plots of the appellation. One third lie on the limestone plateau, near the historic town of Saint-Emilion, one third are on adjoining, south-facing, steep hillsides, with the balance being on terraces between the two. The property was bought by the Moueix family in 2008, and they then made big investments, shoring up the land. Beneath the vines lie ancient galleries in the limestone, which were stone quarries, for many centuries – but some were unstable. Above ground, many plots needed re-planting, which has been slowly taking place. Today, only wine from fully mature plots and the best sites is chosen for the Grand Vin.

The 2022 Belair-Monange actually has a soupcon of Pomerol on the nose, perhaps from the deft touch of black truffle that combines beautifully with the hints of black fruit, blood orange and allspice. This is outstanding in terms of delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins. It s a tad more peppery than the Trotanoy, yet it shares the same sense of symmetry and length. Precise and detailed, this is a wonderful, life-affirming Belair-Monange that s not a million miles away stylistically from Beausejour. This is a Saint-Emilion that will age gracefully in bottle.

98% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc. Cask sample.Slightly timid on the nose but deep, fresh and complex. Lovely texture, the tannins ripe and rounded. Plenty of energy and drive, the finish long and persistent with a chalky-terroir note. Looks to have the reserve for ageing. (JL)
