Chateau Latour-Martillac, Blanc Cru Classe 2022

Latour-Martillac

Case Format: 12x75cl

Max score: 95.0

The wines of Château Latour-Martillac are among the best of Pessac-Léognan and the white wine is also no exception. Since the nineteenth century the estate has been in the hands of the same family, who have continued to produce wines that have grown from strength to strength. Nine hectares of the 54-hectare vineyard are dedicated to white grapes and comprise Sauvignon Blanc (c.60%) and Semillon (c.40%). The oldest part of the vineyard, grafted in 1884, still includes white grapes originally planted by Eduouard Kressman – the Bordeaux wine merchant who purchased the estate in the nineteenth century. The white grapes are planted close to the Garonne River where the micro-climate is cooler and its terroir features clay and limestone soils with gravel pebbles. Château Latour-Martillac only make roughly 2,500 cases per vintage, making it a highly sought-after wine.

52% Sauvignon Blanc, 48% Sémillon. Cask sample. Still quite cloudy. Low-key nose. Then quite a strict, dry palate. Very refreshing and lively. Verging on the Sancerre style favoured by Cheval Blanc and Lafleur! May age better than some. Distinctive and quite long.

The 2022 Latour-Martillac Blanc strides confidently out of the glass with pronounced notes of spiced apples, juicy peaches, and green mango, followed by hints of lime leaves and chalk dust. The medium-bodied palate delivers great intensity, with a refreshing line and long, zesty finish.
