Cask sample, to be bottled in February. Around 50% whole bunches for this vintage. Mid crimson. Inviting aroma of rich but fresh and peppery dark fruit. Firm, savoury and super-fine tannins. Freshness as much from the tannins as from the acidity. (JH)

The 2021 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Champonnet 1er Cru is matured with 60% whole bunches. The stems exert quite an influence on the nose, black pepper notes rather obscuring the fruit underneath. The palate is medium-bodied with a sappy opening, fine tannins, and quite mineral driven. Here, the stems show much better integration. I suspect that the aromatics will come together with bottle age, so dont be afraid to cellar this.
