Ducru Beaucaillou 2019

Ducru-Beaucaillou

Case Format: 6x75cl

Max score: 100.0

Silky tannins embrace a fruity, rounded palate in the Château Ducru Beaucaillou’s first wine. Benefitting from its proximity to the Gironde River estuary, this estate experiences a unique microclimate where harsh winters and scorching summers are usually regulated. Château Ducru-Beaucaillou owes its name to its ‘Beaux Caillous’ or beautiful pebbles, which pays homage to the Gunzian gravel that decorates the Ducru-Beaucaillou’s terroir. Its 50 hectares of vineyards comprise Cabernet Sauvignon (c.65%), Merlot (c.25%), Cabernet Franc (c.5%) and Petit Verdot (c.5%). Requiring around a decade of bottle ageing before reaching its maximum potential, Ducru-Beaucaillou present a pleasing wine that will continue to develop from strength to strength.

Rich, ripe, heady nose filled with milk chocolate, blackcurrant and black cherry with floral touches. This is a beguiling wine, starting off smooth and velvety with a bright cherry freshness that is fun and playful before settling and deepening into a black fruit profile, seductively drawing you in and presenting layer upon layer of acidity, flavour and tannins that, despite being abundant and mouth filling are juicy, soft and fine. Precision winemaking on show here, and across the entire range of wines this year. This is complex and defined with an aerial finish thats filled with crushed stone and freshly picked mint. A glass of wine you just want to sit with and think about. One to buy and hold on to.

This year the blend is 80% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Merlot. The alcohol weighed in at 14.2%, while the pH is 3.8 and the IPT is 88. It will mature for 18 months in French oak barrels, 100% new. Opaque purple-black in color, the 2019 Ducru-Beaucaillou explodes from the glass with bombastic notes of crème de cassis, blueberry pie and plum preserves plus hints of candied violets, dark chocolate, licorice, wild fungi, crushed rocks and tilled soil with a touch of mossy bark. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is a tightly wound coil poised to spring out with layer upon layer of minerals, rich black fruits and floral notes, framed by very firm, exquisitely ripe tannins and electric freshness, finishing long and incredibly layered. WOW!
