Egly-Ouriet, Brut Millesime Grand Cru 2002

Egly-Ouriet

Case Format: 6x75cl

The Maison Egly was born after the second world war, when the grand-father of Francis Egly throws himself into the world of wine growing with three hectares of vineyards in the Grand Cru Ambonnay. His descendants will add another nine hectares to this. In total, the vineyard whose average age of the vines is 40 years covers about ten hectares on the Grands Crus Ambonnay. Unlike the other champagnes, which sell their bottles younger and younger, Francis Egly, following his father Michel, patiently builds a treasure that allows him to market his bruts after four years of ageing, and his vintages after six years.

The 2002 Brut Grand Cru Millésime is spectacular today, soaring from the glass with a complex bouquet of smoky pear, lemon, mandarin orange and peach mingled with smoke, praline, crushed mint and hints of wet chalk. Full-bodied, layered and seamless, its deep and strikingly complete, with a textural attack that segues into a concentrated core framed by a vibrant spine of acidity and buttressed by chalky extract. Long and penetrating, this is one of the finest vintages Francis Egly has produced to date.

106 months on lees, disgorged May 2012. Very fine bead. Very bready nose with gorgeous breadth. Very solid and as though you can taste every single element picked up from that sediment over its nine years in the cellar. A lovely potpourri of aromas. Still lots to chew on. Very dry finish. I would guess zero dosage in this wine. All its richness comes from age. Long and layered. Not too fizzy. So delicate yet so complex! Another very serious wine. With potential.
