Fattoria Le Pupille, Saffredi, Toscana IGT 2020

Fattoria Le Pupille

Case Format: 6x75cl

A succession of gentle hills watching over the majestic contour of the Monte Amiata. It’s precisely from one of these soft and sensual hills that the story of Fattoria Le Pupille begins and leads it to how it is seen today: a heterogenous reality. 1985 can be considered the year of re-foundation of the winery, when from a family wine estate, it starts becoming a modern and entrepreneurial viticultural reality to which Elisabetta Geppetti dedicates energies and dreams.

Saffredi is Fattoria Le Pupille’s flagship wine and it celebrates the winery’s consolidated experience and history as a top player within qualitative Italian wine making. This wine is the outcome of Elisabetta’s intuition and aspiration to make a great wine in Maremma, a wish realized with Giacomo Tachis’s precious help. Saffredi is a special dedication to Fredi, the one who inspired Elisabetta’s passion for wine.

Impressive aromas of fresh herbs from the Tuscan coast, such as sage, mint, rosemary and thyme. Blackcurrants, too. Full-bodied with fine, chewy tannins that show beautiful length and consistency. Racy and beautiful, with lots of subtle and refined character. Slightly more cabernet sauvignon this year, which adds class to the wine. 80% cabernet sauvignon, 10% merlot and 10% petit verdot. Give this about three or four years of bottle age. Try after 2027.

Released in January 2023 (‘because we need to keep investing’ – they’re planning a new building for offices and tasting room for example). Very different year from the 2019. They increased the Cabernet Sauvignon for this hot, dry vintage only (60 to 80%). Plus 10% each of Merlot and Petit Verdot. The Merlot did not thrive in the heat of 2020. Very bright crimson. Very linear cassis nose. Great purity. Little bit of oak still. Still a bit dry on the end but certainly impressive.
