Gavarini Chiniera 2016

Elio Grasso

Case Format: 6x75cl

The Elio Grasso Gavarini Chiniera Barolo presents itself wonderfully dry to the wine lover. This red wine is never coarse or meager, but round and smooth. This dense red wine presents itself full-bodied and complex on the palate. Due to the balanced fruit acid, the Gavarini Chiniera Barolo flatters with a soft mouthfeel, without lacking freshness at the same time. In the finish, this very storable red wine from the wine-growing region of Piedmont finally inspires with considerable length. Once again, hints of mulberry and black currant show. In the aftertaste, mineral notes of the soils dominated by sand and limestone are added.

The Elio Grasso 2016 Barolo Gavarini Chiniera is immediately expressive and bright. The wine is savory and rich with a generous bouquet of dried berries, spice, crushed flowers and even a hint of market-fresh blueberry that we dont see in the other wines. The bouquet moves toward balsam notes with mint and rosemary the longer it stays in the glass. I also get anise flower and fresh licorice root as a pretty signature on the close. With aging in large Slavonian oak casks, the tannic integration is spot-on and so is the freshness and purity of those beautiful Nebbiolo nuances. Some 20,000 bottles were released.

Elio Grasso and now his son Gianluca run this very consistent and well managed property in Monforte. The vineyards lie on 3ha of varied soils behind the cellars at around 350 metres. The nose is very subdued with red fruits lurking. Its a full-bodied and forthright wine with ample volume, and does not seem too extracted despite the formidable tannins. The finish is solid and long. The Grassos other single vineyard, Casa Mate, is too high in alcohol in this vintage.
