Tasted blind. Lustrous mid ruby. Shy, nutty oak notes over cherry fruit and still a tiny bit reductive. Supple and generous, lively sour-cherry fruit with a hint of gingerbread and chewy tannins on the finish. Quite a charmer but with real depth. (WS)

Carlo Ferrini is one of the most talented winemaker in Italy and Giodo is his own boutique winery of 2,5ha in Montalcino. His reputation for elegant wines is not misplaced as he should be considered a kind of master of tannins, his hobby horse. The vines are 18 years old now. The yields at about 50q/ha are the perfect balance for Montalcino, combining concentration and the Mediterranean climate of the region. The wine is deep ruby, with great definition and purity of raspberry fruit; layered with potpourri and smoky woodland notes. Vibrant acidity with sifted silky tannins of great weight at the centre palate will keep it fresh for long ageing and development of greater complexity.
