JL Chave, Hermitage, Rouge 2005

Jean Louis Chave

Case Format: 12x75cl

The Chave family is one of the oldest names in the world of wine and it represents 16 generations of unbroken lineage committed to the production of some of the finest Syrah, Marsanne, and Roussanne on the planet since 1481. The key to perfect balance in Chave’s Hermitage is in their remarkable blending skill, which begins again every season. While percentages vary from year to year, the constant backbone of Hermitage Rouge is Syrah from Bessards Vineyard with its steep, granitic slopes. The Chave family’s methods for their winemaking include traditional farming, super low yields, full ripeness, and minimal manipulation. Their unmatched meticulousness continues through five centuries to render venerable expressions of the purest of northern Rhône terroir.

Julia Harding MW

Deep greyish garnet but not much sign – in the colour – of its age. Beautifully fragrant, combining floral and savoury aromas – more peppery char than meaty. Some (oak?) char still showing on the palate, a slightly chewy texture of powerful tannins – fine-grained but deeply layered – gradually mellowing in bottle. Still a baby and not ready for drinking but with lots of promise of greater finesse ahead. (JH)
