Le Pavillon 2009

M. Chapoutier

Case Format: 3x150cl

Max score: 100.0

The renowned producer has impressively, over a quarter of a century, amassed the greatest number of 100/100 Parker points in the world, and there can hardly be more perfect site-specific expression of the noble Syrah grape than these two crus in Chapoutier’s Sélections Parcellaires. Just 600 cases are produced from only four hectares on the hill of Hermitage. The miniscule Le Pavillon plot comprising a subsection of the granitic ‘Les Bessards’ vineyard which is planted to 65 year-old Syrah vines. The wine is aged for 18-20 months in 50% new French oak.

Glowing dark crimson. Burnt tarry whiffs on the nose. Complex vine stumps on a bonfire. Then an unctuous palate entry. Very clever. You really do have to take your hat off to Michel Chapoutier and team for producing these gems, each one so different from the last and chock full of character. Wonderfully graceful polished tannins and great length. They make all but a handful of 2009 red bordeaux look a little predictable. Great depth and velvety texture. Smoke but not mirrors. It’s all real! You could actually drink this with pleasure already but it would be a massive waste of all that unrealised potential.

Coming all from the granite soils of the Les Bessards lieu-dit and the most massive and rich of the lineup, the 2009 M. Chapoutier Ermitage Le Pavillon, aged for 20 months in 50% new French oak, delivers a decadent, yet vivacious and riveting bouquet of creamy raspberries, crème de cassis, crushed flowers, charcoal, and grilled meats. Incredibly rich and full on the nose, the palate follows suit and possesses a full-bodied, thick texture, thrilling levels of concentration, and gorgeous underlying acidity and minerality that keeps this lively and fresh. Absolutely blockbuster stuff and this brilliantly pure, impeccably balanced Hermitage needs 10-12 years of bottle age, and will evolve gracefully for longer than I’d care to estimate.
