Le Petit Lion du Marquis de Las Cases 2019

Leoville de Las Cases

Case Format: 6x75cl

One of the largest and oldest classified growths in the Médoc, Château Léoville Las Cases is the leading estate in Saint-Julien. Following on from the 2007 vintage, they created their formidable second wine, Le Petit Lion du Marquis de Las Cases, amidst a period where several vineyard plots were being uprooted and replanted. The Léoville Las Cases vineyards comprise Cabernet Sauvignon (c.61%), Merlot (c.21%) and Cabernet Franc (c.16%) and thrive on a terroir of gravelly sand and clay soil. For Le Petit Lion du Marquis there is a significant portion of Merlot in the blend, with grapes taken from old vines from a north-facing plot close to Latour. This concentrated wine often features aromas and flavours of dark fruits and has been created with the intention to be drunk earlier than the grand vin.

The 2019 Le Petit Lion is excellent, offering up nots of dark berries, plums, pencil shavings and loamy soil, followed by a medium to full-bodied, deep and lively palate that’s nicely concentrated, concluding with a long, saline finish. It’s produced from vines within the clos of Léoville-Las Cases itself—mainly young-vine Cabernet Sauvignon and old-vine, less optimally exposed Merlot in a block that borders Latour.

Gorgeous perfumed cherry fruit on the nose, such clarity and drive the aromas jumping out the glass. The palate has a real elegance, juicy but calm, smooth and sophisticated, wrapped up in silky tannins that gently support the fruit. Charming with approachability. You really get the vibrant fruit but its so sculpted, no edges with touches of iodine, wet stone and iron in the wine and a soft saline kick at the end, so layered yet pure. Effortless charm here.
