Les Griffons de Pichon Baron 2022

Pichon Baron

Case Format: 12x75cl

Back in 1987, the insurance company AXA decided to enter the wine business and purchased Château Pichon Baron which was in need of investment. AXA saw the outstanding potential of the property and realised that it was an opportunity too good to miss. The Château was restored, machine-harvesting was ended, and over the years the size of the vineyards has been increased. More importantly, quality has improved swiftly, and now once again truly excellent wines are being produced – even in tougher vintages. Under the direction of Christian Seely, quality has never been higher than it is today, partly thanks to ever more rigorous selection in the vineyard.

Les Griffons de Pichon Baron is the latest addition to the estate. This wine has a pure and upright character. It is the result of the same rigor and meticulousness in the plot selection as the Grand Vin. Coming from the historic vineyards, it benefits from a barrel ageing as long as Château Pichon Baron, but a specific blend more marked in Merlot, which softens its aromatic power. Les Griffons invites to a tonic and fresh experience, ample and straight, all in energy. This wine can be kept in the cellar for more than 20 years but can be tasted now.

CRITIC REVIEWS

94-96
Jeb Dunnuck

A solid step up over the Les Tourelles, the 2022 Les Griffons De Pichon Baron is also Merlot-dominated and checks in as 50% Merlot, 46% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 4% Petit Verdot that will spend 18 months in 40% new French oak. Gorgeously pure cassis, smoked earth, graphite, tobacco, and crushed stone define the aromatics, and its full-bodied, with a layer, concentrated mid-palate, fine tannins, and a great finish. The purity and precision here are truly something.

The 2022 Les Griffons de Pichon Baron is the more serious of the estates two second wines, with Cabernet Sauvignon rather than Merlot dominating the blend. Revealing aromas of dark berries, cherries, spices and pencil shavings, its medium to full-bodied, fleshy and enveloping, with powdery tannins and a more structured profile than Les Tourelles.
