Château Malescot Saint Exupery’s history can be traced all the way back to 1616, and since then it has been seized during the French Revolution, and confiscated after auction during World War I. Today the third growth estate is run by the Zuger family who continue to make wines under the lead of Michel Rolland. Its 30-hectare vineyard comprises Cabernet Sauvignon (c.50%), Merlot (c.35%), Cabernet Franc (c.10%) and Petit Verdot (c.5%) and sits on a terroir of gravel, chalk and clay soils with iron deposits. The wine is aged in 80-100% new French oak for 14-16 months. When young its grand vin is light and supple, but after a few years of bottle ageing it opens up to reveal both a silky, supple texture and gorgeous perfume.

Black core with deep crimson rim. Much sweeter on the nose than most of the Margaux 2020s I have tasted – perhaps thats the high percentage of Merlot? Damson and blackberry. Even a hint of blackcurrant throat pastilles. That sweetness is there on the palate too but balanced by fresh acidity. Its a little bit unmeshed at the moment in a sweet-sour way but should gain greater integration with time. Tannins are firm, on the thick side, chewy. A bit ungainly for now. (JH)

Enjoyable black fruit aromatics on the nose, they do a good job here of soft pedalling the extraction on the attack, although by the mid palate we are in bitter chocolate and liquorice territory. Again, concentration and intensity is an overriding signature of the vintage. 3% Petit Verdot completes the blend. A yield of 31hl/ha.
