According to Axel Heinz, managing director of the estate, the 2017 vintage for Masseto was analytically close to 2011 but with more elegance. The grapes were harvested between 24 and 30 August, so relatively early, in just three tries - quicker than usual. A powerful wine displaying grace in a warm, dry vintage, its dominated by bright blueberry and blackberry fruit, raw butter and balsamic whiffs. The palate is focused on mulberry and dark chocolate, polished but concentrated with a thick finish due to its youthfulness. Firm yet creamy tannins and lively acidity balance the hefty 15.5% of alcohol. An outstanding wine that will reward further ageing with more complexity.

100% Merlot. A very hot and dry vintage that gave small clusters and berry sizes. July and August passed with barely any rain but with cool nights to allow the vines to recover from hot days and retain acidity in the fruit. Deep purple colour. Sweet, smoky, with a mass of opulent black fruit on the nose. Mocha and nutmeg too – complex and enticing. Black fruit in a rush on the palate, accompanied by dense and rich tannins. Mouth-coating, fine-grained texture complements the massive intensity of fruit. Everything is turned up, but it is all in balance, making for an extremely impressive and long finish. Opulent and hedonistic. (TP)
