Meyney

Max score: 94.0

Occupying a single 51-hectare plot overlooking the Gironde estuary, Château Meyney benefits from one of the most enviable spots in the Saint-Estèphe appellation. Steeped in history, Meyney dates itself back to the seventeenth century, at a period where the estate was owned by a group of Bordeaux monks. Today it is a subsidiary of Crédit Agricole Group, and was purchased alongside Grand-Puy Ducasse, as well as many other acclaimed estates. Using their superb terroir to their advantage, Meyney’s vineyards are planted with Cabernet Sauvignon (c.60%), Merlot (c.30%) and Petit Verdot (c.10%), and benefit from some of the oldest vines in the appellation – with several reaching nearly 100 years of age. The terroir comprises gravel and sand, with a large strip of blue clay that helps both the Merlot and Petit Verdot to thrive. In turn, their alchemic blend of grapes and respect for the terroir has contributed to a spicy and complex wine that has excellent ageing potential.

Tamlyn Currin

Full bottle 1,348 g. Certified HVE. 52% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, 13% Petit Verdot. Muscled, long, racy and savoury. A long graphite spine. Rippling with dark-red fruit that seems to gleam like old, polished mahogany; the quiet, cool breath of green pine needles balancing the soft glow of burning cigar. The taut muscle of the tannins becomes more evident on the finish. One to hold in the cellar for a few more years. (TC)

Jancis Robinson

Full bottle 1,350 g. Cask sample taken 26 April. 52% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, 13% Petit Verdot. Merlot was picked 16 to 24 September, Petit Verdot was picked 23 September, Cabernet Sauvignon was picked 24 September to 1 October. Cold soak and some malo took place in new barrels. Matured in barriques (35% new). Dark, lustrous crimson. Really very glamorous indeed. Ripe but fresh nose with an interesting balsam note. Smooth as satin initially on the palate with the savoury tannins (actually there in abundance) just nudging onto the palate at the end, which is dry but not drying. Very long and rather splendid on the finish with St-Estèphe’s stoniness evident. Very smart indeed with no concessions to simple sweetness.
