CRITIC REVIEWS

The 2006 Syrah Onkaparinga was reviewed as a barrel sample in Issue 173. From a better vintage, it is a fragrant, relatively forward, spicy, layered and friendly Syrah that will evolve for another 4-6 years.

The inky colored 2006 Clarendon Hills Syrah Onkaparinga is a beauty that has an aromatic meatiness reminiscent of the Moritz, yet a more polished silkiness that comes closer to the Brookman in style. It offers up thrilling aromas of smoked beef, ripe herbs, mineral, olive, and cigar that flow to a full-bodied, seamless, and gorgeously constructed wine that has no hard edges, excellent density, and an overall balanced, pure profile. As with all of the single vineyard Syrahs, this is 100% Syrah that spent 18 months in 85% new French oak. It should be enjoyed over the coming decade.
