Opus One 2007

Opus One

Case Format: 6x75cl

Max score: 97.0

Opus One is the realised dream of two men: Baron Philippe de Rothschild of Chateau Mouton Rothschild in Bordeaux and Napa Valley vintner Robert Mondavi. Together, they set out to create a single wine that harnessed the unrivalled winemaking of Bordeaux, whilst reaping the benefits of Napa Valley’s outstanding terroir.
Opus One has intense aromas of black plum, blueberry, blackcurrant, and dried rose petals, punctuated by undertones of minerality. The creamy, satin texture is framed by fine-grained tannins. Its freshness and soft acidity creates a subtle tension between the dark fruit flavours, savoury herbs, espresso, and cocoa. A delicate dark chocolate bitterness lingers after each sip.

A powerful wine, full of black chocolate, cocoa powder and olive paste, layers of tightly packed flavour, many consider this to be the best of the decade and it is certainly extremely powerful. Dense, smoked bacon and chocolate flavours, needs to be paired with some equally rich food, and needs to be relaxed into - definitely a wine where you need to kick your shoes off, not make any appointments for the rest of the night, and take your time. A long life ahead of it also, if you choose to wait - this would benefit from longer in bottle. 1% Malbec and 6% Petit Verdot completes the blend. 20 days skin contact (note from this point the skin contact often heads a little shorter again). A perfect vintage until rains during harvest.

Two of the strongest wines ever made at Opus One, the 2007 has terrific black currant fruit, licorice, incense, and subtle smoke, an opulent, even voluptuous mouthfeel, dazzling purity and texture, and a skyscraper-like mouthfeel. This is a sensational Opus One, with sweet tannin and impressive precision and depth. It can be drunk now or cellared for 25+ years.
