Pavillon Rouge du Chateau Margaux 2019

Margaux

Case Format: 6x75cl

Max score: 96.0

The second sibling of the illustrious Château Margaux, this gorgeous second wine is not to be overlooked. The quality is not far from that of the first wine, as Pavillon Rouge is cultivated on plots that once would have contributed to the blending of Château Margaux. Steeped in history, Château Margaux can date itself back to the sixteenth century. Currently a First Growth property, the estate creates some of the finest wines in the Médoc. Owned by the Mentzepoulos family since 1977, Margaux has consistently created exceptional wines under the same family for the past five decades and the Pavillon Rouge is no exception. Expect a similar style to the first wine, imbued with a similar sense of softness and abundance of flavour. Ready to drink earlier than the first wine, Pavillon Rouge still has good ageing potential.

James Suckling

Fresh tobacco, currant and earth, opening up to forest flowers. It’s rich in tannins, but very soft and beautiful. Layered, with lots of fine fruit and a velvety texture. Blackberry and chocolate in the finish too. 27% of the crop and a blend of 76% cabernet sauvignon and 19% merlot, the rest petit verdot and cabernet franc. Delicious already, but give it at least six years of bottle age. Better after 2027.

James Lawther MW

76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Merlot, 3% Petit Verdot, 2% Cabernet Franc. 27% of the production. Barrel sample. Quite rich and ripe with an almost raisined note to the fruit. A little more robust than usual, the fruit dense and gourmand, the tannins plentiful, firm and grainy behind. A touch of freshness on the finish pulls it together but a bit of chew at the end. (JL)
