Rare Champagne 2013

Piper Heidsieck

Case Format: 3x75cl

Piper-Heidsieck is one of the most well known establishments in Champagne, France. Piper-Heidsieck’s most famous wine is the Rare Millésime, produced from a Chardonnay – Pinot Noir blend. Aged for seven years in the cellars before release, the wine is stored in temperature-controlled cellars keeping the house style consistent from year to year. Grapes are vinified by grape variety and by individual plot to allow for more control in the blending process.

Such a pleasingly elegant and multifaceted Champagne with salty, creamy and toasty elements all wound together. Plenty of apricot pastries, pears, brown butter, fennel and salted almonds, with some iodine. It’s silky on the palate, with soft and supple bubbles, while remaining fresh and on edge. 70% chardonnay and 30% pinot noir, from 11 cru villages mostly in Montagne de Reims with Cotes de Blancs. Disgorged December 2022. 9 g/L dosage. Drink or hold.

With its combination 70% Chardonnay and 30% Pinot Noir, its the sensation of super-fine, aromatic Chardonnay that leads Rare in 2013, with yellow apple, roasted citrus and pineapple aromas focused into a sleek, tightly packed frame. Theres some complex oyster shell lift and zesty lime tart intensity, the mousse sleek and silky, the length compelling. Less overtly tense and acid-driven than the 2008, yet with more energy and detail than the 2012, this is a very fine release that should enjoy a considerable lifespan. Fermented in stainless steel, with eight years on lees. A notable percentage of the Chardonnay comes from the Montagne de Reims
