Unico 2007

Vega Sicilia

Case Format: 3x75cl

Max score: 95.0

40 of the 210 vine-growing hectares on the Vega Sicilia estate are used to produce Unico, which spends at least ten years between barrel and bottle, representing one of the longest ageing processes in the world. This incredible terroir, influenced by the Douro River and the unique ageing process, make their wines timeless when they age. A unique and timeless taste that has elevated it to among the aristocracy of the great classic wines.

It offers an infinite complexity that is gradually revealed, in every sip, the palate immensely silky and elegant, and has an ageing capacity that only a handful of wines in the world can claim.

Bold, with earthy, meaty and floral aromas. Intense, balsamic palate, the alcohol seems more apparent here. Powerful and spicy with a concentrated finish. Say Vega Sicilia’s notes: ‘it is not a famous vintage, but it is one that identifies the region and style of the house. It is, in one word, elegant.’ It certainly is true to its terroir, though I might argue with the word elegant at present. Warm spring, ‘abnormally cold’ summer; technical director Gonzalo Iturriaga calls it a really complicated year. One and a half years in new oak barrels, one year in used barrels and about two and a half years in large-format tanks. 74,975 bottles, 3,107 magnums, 156 double magnums and 11 Imperials. Tasted from magnum.

The 2007 Único from magnum showed much better than expected, as 2007 was very challenging. The wine showed concentrated and quite tannic, from a powerful year with 14.5% alcohol after a rainy season and an unusually cold summer. It was produced with Tinto Fino and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. 3,107 magnums produced. Artwork by Francisco Javier Rodríguez Quesada.
