2003 Chateau Leoville Poyferre 2eme Cru Classe, Saint-Julien 12x75cl

Chateau Leoville Poyferre

Case Format: 75cl

Max score: 96

Teaming with lush, juicy fruits, Château Léoville Poyferré offers a decadent wine where the distinct characteristics of Cabernet Sauvignon truly shines. Expect aromas of cassis, spice and rich black fruits, coupled with sensuous and supple textures – both of which remain the hallmark of Léoville Poyferré’s spectacular grand vin. Once part of the larger Léoville estate, Léoville-Poyferre eventually stood on its own after the French revolution saw its previous home divide into Léoville-Las-Cases, Léoville Barton and Léoville Poyferre. Its 80 hectares of vineyard comprise Cabernet Sauvignon (c.68%), Merlot (c.24%), Cabernet Franc (c.6%) and Petit Verdot (c.2%) and are divided into five different blocks that are dispersed around Saint-Julien. The terroir is mostly gravel, sand, clay and limestone soils. Château Léoville Poyferré can be enjoyed on the younger side but is best after between 10-15 years of bottle ageing.

Medium ruby-red. Extravagant aromas of currant, loam, leather and graphite; like the 1990 in its roasted character. Then sweet and dense but with surprising aromatic lift in the mouth, not to mention considerable power. Liqueur-like black fruit, licorice and mineral flavors really stain the palate. Cuvelier maintained that this vintage was not acidified. The cabernet acidity, he said, was healthy and the grape skins gave up their acidity slowly during the vinification. A very impressive showing, and built to last.

The spectacular 2003 Leoville Poyferre exhibits a dense purple color with a touch of lightening at the edge as well as notes of creosote, barbecue smoke, jammy black currants, licorice and spice box. This intense, voluptuously textured, full-bodied St.-Julien possesses low acidity and ripe tannin. Still fresh and exuberant, it is just entering its plateau of full maturity where it should remain for 10-15+ years.

Very dark garnet. Light nose. Pretty tough with lots of extraction and not quite enough fruit so that it s now pretty chewy. Fruit is fading.
