Steeped in history, Château Margaux can date itself back to the sixteenth century. Currently a First Growth property, Margaux is one of the finest wines in the Médoc. Owned by the Mentzepoulos family since 1977, Margaux has consistently created exceptional wines under the same family for the past five decades. Their wines are renowned for their perfumed elegance, which unusually is offset by a full-body that is brimming with layers of complexity, complete with seemingly infinite length. Their 80 hectares of vineyards are cultivated on multiple plots, with their best terroir on a 25-hectare parcel of deep gravel soils. They are planted with Cabernet Sauvignon (c.75%), Merlot (c.20%), Petit Verdot (c.3%) and Cabernet Franc (c.2%). Most of the work in the vineyards is managed using organic farming methods, with a majority of the grape sorting still being done by hand. One of the most celebrated wines in the region, Margaux have frequently received the “wine of the vintage” award.

The 2014 Chateau Margaux has a well-defined bouquet with cedar-infused black fruit, undergrowth and touches of brown spice. A little more precision than the Haut-Brion. The palate is medium-bodied with sapid black fruit, finely balanced. It's not the most complex First Growth, and it feels linear and strict toward the Pauillac-like finish. It's a "serious" Chateau Margaux that will hopefully loosen up in the next few years. We'll see. Tasted blind at the Southwold 10-Year-On tasting.

The 2014 Chateau Margaux represents 36% of the year's total production and is a blend of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. Affording the glass five to ten minutes to open, the aromatics are very similar to those expressed out of barrel, those dark cherries and violets, tightly wound at first but unfurling beautifully and seemingly with each swirl of the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannin and it appears to have fomented a little more finesse during its elevage. There is wonderful mineral tension and dash of spiciness on the persistent finish. There remains some tightness here, the implication that this is a Chateau Margaux determined to give long-term pleasure. Therefore, do not be afraid to give it a decade in the cellar.

Tasted blind. Deep garnet. Fragrant with dark-red fruit, subtly sweet and inviting. A touch leafy/minty. Fine, almost chalky, tannins, a little leaner than the Latour and Haut-Brion but elegant and harmonious. (JH)
