The 2014 Canon-la-Gaffeliere has a well-defined nose, fresher than some of its peers, and is a mixture of red and black fruit, cedar and mint. This feels composed. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red berry fruit and fine tannins, clean and fresh with much better weight on the finish than its peers. This is one of the superior Saint-Emilion wines this year. Tasted blind at the Southwold 10-Year-On tasting.

The 2014 Canon la Gaffeliere has a fruit-driven, powerful bouquet with rounded raspberry, kirsch, mulberry and light honeyed scents that seem pure and seductive. The palate is medium-bodied with saturated red plum and tart cherry fruit. There is a spicy residue on the back palate with fine structure and poise towards the finish. As ever, a well-crafted, quite delicious Canon la Gaffeliere that should age with style. If the 2014 Canon doesn't quite deliver the opulence for you, then this suits the bill.

Tasted blind. Garnet with brick rim. Subtle evolved aromas of undergrowth and cigar box and still some dark fruit. Fine, powdery tannins. Elegant, fresh and harmonious if perhaps a touch drying on the finish. (JH)
