Chateau Cheval Blanc

Case Format: 75cl

Max score: 94

Drink To: 2021-2032

The leading estate in Saint-Émilion, Château Cheval Blanc has continued to create beautifully complex wines that are unrivalled in terms of finesse, flavour and cellaring potential. Unusual for Saint-Émilion, Cheval Blanc uses majority Cabernet Franc in its blend (c.52%), resulting in a wine that is fresh, elegant and delicate. The 39-hectare estate is divided into 45 different plots where each one is treated differently to account for the age of the vines, soil type and more. Their rich terroir is formed of gravel, clay and sandy soils all which sit atop a sedimentary rock – this unusual mixed terrain is what allows Cheval Blanc to stand out. Château Cheval Blanc are committed to honouring the land that produces their magnificent wines and at the forefront of recent work has been an unwavering commitment to biodiversity and agroecology in a bid to allow the vineyards to thrive and to ensure the longevity of the estate amidst the ongoing crisis of climate change.

The 2016 Le Petit Cheval comes from just three, sandier parcels and continues the estate s policy of blending as much of the entire vineyard into the Grand Vin as possible without compromising quality. It has a generous black cherry, boysenberry and fig-scented bouquet with light cedar aromas courtesy of the Cabernet Franc. The medium-bodied palate delivers supple tannin and a crisp line of acidity. I appreciate the freshness here, the linearity and approachability, and the subtle graphite tincture toward the finish. Quite elegant in style. Drink this over the next decade.

The 2016 Le Petit Cheval is composed of 62% Merlot and 38% Cabernet Franc. Medium garnet-purple colored, it has a knock-out nose featuring beautiful red rose, black tea, unsmoked cigars, menthol and yeast extract scents with a core of black cherries, kirsch and warm plums plus a waft of dusty soil. Medium-bodied, tightly wound and wonderfully perfumed in the mouth, the palate features loads of vibrant, pristine pure fruit and a beautifully soft texture, finishing very long.

62% Merlot and most of the rest Cabernet Franc from a fine vintage. Very handsome indeed. Just the wine to be drinking now. No 'second-best' about it - very toothsome and fresh. Just the most appetising aspect of this appellation concentrated into one wine. One to drink while waiting for the grand vin to mature. (JR)
