The 2017 Ruchottes-Chambertin Clos des Ruchottes Grand Cru has the same mixture of red and black fruit on the nose as the 2019, though perhaps with a little more florality. The palate has wonderful balance and mineralite, with a discreet ferrous note in the background. It merges with dark plummy fruit towards the sapid finish, hints of fig coming through with time. Less spicy than it showed from barrel, this is nevertheless a seriously fine Grand Cru for the vintage.

At least based on these barrel samples, the 2017 Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru Clos des Ruchottes has the edge over the Clos Saint-Jacques this year, soaring from the glass with a fragrant bouquet of red cherries, raspberries, spices and orange rind. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, satiny and incisive with good concentration at the core, tangy acids and chalky structuring tannins.

Some vines were uprooted after 2017 and will be replanted " sometimes some mechanical work of the soil is necessary first, then soil analysis before they do anything. Real richness on the nose. 'This one is happy today', notes Cyrielle Rousseau. Rich and open with dark fruits and just a tiny hint of peppery floral character. Utterly fragrant without being showy. So fine while still firm, so supple, so at ease. A happy wine even now. (JH)
