The 2017 Clos Saint-Denis Grand Cru is more expressive aromatically than the Clos de la Roche at the moment. The terroir is slightly better articulated, notes of crushed stone perfectly infusing the red berry fruit. The palate is precise and focused, almost symmetrical in style, and very expressive. The long, gorgeous, almost tart finish belies the structure of this Grand Cru. Superb.

Soaring from the glass with aromas of raspberries, cherries and blood orange mingled with nuances of peony, raw cocoa, cinnamon and cedar wood, Dujac's 2017 Clos Saint-Denis Grand Cru is full-bodied, velvety and enveloping, its deep core of elegantly concentrated fruit framed by supple and powdery tannins and underpinned by succulent acids. Long, perfumed and defined, this was showing very well indeed from bottle.

Average 85% whole bunch. From 2017 they will declassify young vines into the Morey village wine. 0.17 ha (0.42 acres) recently planted and the same 8"9 years ago, then the rest of the 1.1 ha (2.7 acres) that are 30"70 years old will be replanted. Fallow soil prepared with a variety of cover crops not by deep ploughing. Sorghum, for example, is nematocidic. They planted the rootstocks first and you don't need to spray before the grafting. But in field grafting you cut below the graft to reduce sap flow and that could be bad for esca. Barrel sample. Lightish cherry red. Rich and spiced on the nose, sweet cherry. Deep and chewy and definitely embryonic on the palate, dry layers of flavour yet to be revealed. Compact, firm, a deep foundation for the fruit and for the future. Really takes a grip of your mouth and the goes on and on with a freshness and that tannin texture. (JH)
