The 2017 Vosne-Romanée Aux Malconsorts 1er Cru has a little more intensity on the nose compared to the Les Beaux Monts at the moment, while the fruit is a tad darker. The palate is compact on the entry, linear and strict, with blackberry, raspberry and touches of brine on the sturdy finish. This demonstrates the spine I look for in a Malconsorts. Give it three or four years once in bottle, because it punches at Grand Cru weight.

Both more concentrated and more introverted than the preceding Beaux Monts, Dujac's 2017 Vosne-Romanee 1er Cru Aux Malconsorts opens in the glass with aromas of sweet red berries, plums, orange rind, smoked duck and peonies. On the palate, it's full-bodied, supple and elegantly muscular, with fine depth at the core, powdery tannins and mouthwatering acids, concluding with a perfumed finish.

Average 85% whole bunch. Southern end of Vosne with more power. A parcel they took on in 2005. Barrel sample. Intense, rich and sweetly spicy on the nose opening up to a light floral note, you can sense the power even on the nose. Big but still elegant, so much pure fruit all packed into a chewy framework and a hint of something almost like curry spice (not quite but I can't get any nearer " cumin?) on the finish. Depth and length. Dry tannins all in proportion to the richness of the fruit. (JH)
