The 2018 Nuits Saint-Georges Clos de la Marechale 1er Cru has a lot of volatility on the nose that obscures the black cherry fruit underneath that veil. Powerful but not appealing and it deteriorates after 10 minutes. The palate is medium-bodied with dry, "furry "tannins and dark berry fruit. A slightly desiccated, high alcohol finish suggests this has little long-term viability. This is a vexing showing. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2018 red tasting.

Barrel sample but already racked and back into barrel. Lost about 40% in 2018 because of the hail in mid July. Sweet dark fruit like sloes or damsons. Smells like tiny berries but fully ripe. A completely different fruit profile from the Chambolle wines. Riper and darker. Much more chewy, more masculine , firmly structured. Not trying to charm at all. Building its toned muscle. Pretty dry and telling you to stay away but the tannins are fine if dark and dry. (JH)
