Case Format: 75cl

Max score: 93

Drink To: 2025-2038

The leading estate in Saint-Émilion, Château Cheval Blanc has continued to create beautifully complex wines that are unrivalled in terms of finesse, flavour and cellaring potential. Unusual for Saint-Émilion, Cheval Blanc uses majority Cabernet Franc in its blend (c.52%), resulting in a wine that is fresh, elegant and delicate. The 39-hectare estate is divided into 45 different plots where each one is treated differently to account for the age of the vines, soil type and more. Their rich terroir is formed of gravel, clay and sandy soils all which sit atop a sedimentary rock – this unusual mixed terrain is what allows Cheval Blanc to stand out. Château Cheval Blanc are committed to honouring the land that produces their magnificent wines and at the forefront of recent work has been an unwavering commitment to biodiversity and agroecology in a bid to allow the vineyards to thrive and to ensure the longevity of the estate amidst the ongoing crisis of climate change.

The 2018 Petit Cheval is a rich, heady wine. The natural intensity of the year comes through loud and clear in the wine's super-ripe profile and voluptuous feel. Black cherry, tobacco, new leather, licorice and menthol saturate the palate. When I tasted it from barrel I thought the Petit Cheval would drink well upon release, but I suggested cellaring for a few years. There's a lot here.

A blend of 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Franc, the medium to deep garnet-purple colored 2018 Le Petit Cheval rocks up with open-knit notes of crushed black raspberries, plum preserves and mulberries, plus hints of wild mushrooms, pencil lead, mossy tree bark and cloves. The medium to full-bodied palate is plush, juicy and pretty much ready for business, featuring plenty of earth and black fruit layers, finishing long with a spicy kick. Ten percent of the total production this year went into this second label of Cheval Blanc. I'd give it just another year or two in bottle to fan its tail out a little more and then drink it over the next 15-18 years.

Smoky, filigree tannins, full body with refined but impactful dark fruit. All alto for now - the soprano and tenor will emerge with time. Iodine and olive on the length. Certainly requires age. (RH)
