The 2019 Barolo Romirasco is another compelling wine in this range from the Conterno family. Dark cherry, plum, mocha, spice, new leather, blood orange, licorice, spice and rose petal capture the beguiling nuance that is so typical of first-class Barolo. Readers will find a wine of tremendous intrigue. Give it a few years to soften. A kiss of French oak lingers.

Monforte d Alba. Mid ruby. The firm, concentrated nose has quite enough ballast to distract from the (not insubstantial) tannic charge. Very long and ambitious but even more complex than its stablemates. (JR)
