Chateau Berliquet

Case Format: 75cl

Max score: 95

Drink To: 2025-2038

Formed on the poetic limestone slopes of Saint-Émilion, Château Berliquet have created a wine teaming with graceful tannins that is laced with supple flavours of raspberry, graphite and cedar. A rocky few years saw Berliquet at risk of being subsumed by its illustrious neighbour, Château Canon. But taken under the guise of acclaimed winemaker Nicolas Audebert in 2017, Berliquet’s unique terroir was recognised as outstanding in its own right. Baring the similar elegance and precision of Canon, Berliquet’s terrain benefits from soil that is rich in clay, allowing for both a Merlot and Cabernet Franc that is abundant in flavour. Armed with a flurry of terroir specialists, and under Audebert’s watchful expertise, the results have been breath-taking. Displaying an unwavering commitment to sustainability, Berliquet have recently introduced new environmental practices to increase biodiversity. We can’t wait to see what the future holds for their upcoming vintages.

Antonio Galloni

The 2020 Berliquet is another step in a direction favoring finesse over the burly power that often marked the wines of the past. Delicate and nuanced, with pretty floral top notes, this mid-weight Saint-Emilion is a charmer. Drink it over the next decade or so.

Lisa Perrotti-Brown

The 2020 Berliquet is composed of 69% Merlot and 31% Cabernet Franc, weighing in at 14.5% alcohol. It is aging in French oak barrels, 50% new. Deep purple-black colored, it trots casually out of the glass with effortlessly flamboyant scents of stewed black cherries, warm plums and baked blackberries, plus hints of chocolate mint, violets and licorice with a touch of fertile loam. The medium to full-bodied palate is very tightly wound with layers of ripe black fruits and earthy accents, framed by finely grained tannins and tons of freshness, finishing long and fragrant.

69% Merlot, 31% Cabernet Franc. Cask sample. Clean and effortless in style. Delicate summer-fruit notes with a hint of mint. Juicy and fresh with chalky tannins and dry finish. Eminently digeste. (JL)
