At just five hectares in size, Château L'Église Clinet should not be overlooked. Creating some of the finest offerings of the appellation, the estate has commanded some of the highest scores throughout the region, with vintages that have even rivalled the powerhouses of Petrus and Lafleur. This is a serious wine that is dripping in opulence and aromatics. Its deep complexity ensures that it needs over a decade of bottle ageing before reaching its full, unrivalled potential. The five-hectare vineyard comprises Merlot (c.85%), Cabernet Franc (c.14%) and Malbec (c.1%), however the Malbec is seldom added to the final blend. The terroir is deep clay and gravel soils, where the vineyard’s natural slopes allow for optimal drainage. The vines average an impressive 40 years of age and continue to thrive on L'Église Clinet’s exceptional terroir.

The 2020 L'Eglise-Clinet has a very intense bouquet with multi-layered red and black fruit, cedar and iron scents complex and engaging, though there is a touch of oak still to be assimilated. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe, saturated tannins. Satin-textured, seamless and very precise with an irresistible, youthful, sensual finish, this is a brilliant wine that needs a few years in bottle (if you can resist). Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting.

The 2020 L'Eglise Clinet is a blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc. The Merlot was picked between the 11th and the 14th of September, and the Cabernet Franc was picked on the 16th of September. It has an alcohol of 14.4% and is aging in French oak barrels, 80% new. Displaying and opaque purple-black color, it needs a bit of swirling to reveal a fascinating array of earthy notesa black truffles, charcoal, mossy tree bark and fallen leavesa over a profound core of preserved plums, blackberry preserves and violets, with a waft of tapenade. The medium to full-bodied palate has exquisitely ripe tannins and bold freshness supporting the seductively ripe, black fruit layers, finishing on a lingering fragrant earth note.

Tasted blind. Black core with crimson rim. Sweet, ripe and openly dark-fruited, pure and lightly floral. Some red fruits peeking through. A touch oaky on the palate but there s juicy fresh fruit here that twines round the powdery fine tannins and gives freshness on the finish. Voluptuous, long and powerful. (JH)
