2020 Chateau Malartic Lagraviere Cru Classe, Pessac-Leognan 6x75cl

Chateau Malartic Lagraviere

Case Format: 75cl

Max score: NR

Previously owned by the champagne house Laurent-Perrier, Château Malartic Lagravière was purchased by the Bonnie family in 1997, who still run the estate and continue to create elegant wines that are worthy of its Cru Classé de Graves status. The vineyard comprises 47 hectares that are planted to Cabernet Sauvignon (c.50%), Merlot (c.25%) and Cabernet Franc (c.25%). Its terroir constitutes gravel and clay with limestone soils. After harvest, the wine is aged in 50% new French oak, where it has limited skin contact. The Malartic Lagravière constitutes a well-balanced wine that continues to grow in complexity as it ages, seeing it develop the distinct mineral characteristics that are so usually typified by wines of Pessac-Léognan.

The 2020 Malartic-Lagraviere offers a mixture of red and black fruit on the nose, with a slight menthol note that is somewhat distracting. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins and a keen line of acidity. This is a little richer than the Haut-Bailly, with a licorice-tinged finish. It's not bad overall, though I suspect this was not a representative bottle and will not issue a score. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting.

The deep purple-black 2020 Malartic Lagraviere leaps from the glass with vibrant notes of Bing cherries, black raspberries, ripe plums and boysenberries, plus suggestions of pencil lead, wild sage and crushed rocks. Medium-bodied, the palate has lovely energy and freshness, offering a solid backbone of grainy tannins to support the lively red and black fruit layers, finishing savory. The tentative blend is 50.4% Cabernet Sauvignon, 47.8% Merlot, and 1.8% Cabernet Franc, with only 38% of production going into the grand vin. The alcohol is 14% this year. Commencing with the 2020 vintage, the estate has chosen a new bottle for the grand cru and second vin, highlighted by an engraved ship, the symbol of the estate.

Tasted blind. Deep crimson. Leafy and open-hearted with fresh black fruit. Firm, chewy, fresh but slightly sinewy on the finish though the harmony is there. Just very slightly dry on the finish even though there is a lot of fruit at the core. (JH)
