The first bottle of the 2020 Prieure-Lichine was corked. The second takes time to unfurl with blackberry, gravel and crushed violet. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, sapid black fruit, brine and sea salt. There's real salinity here, and it leaves you salivating for more on the finish. This is very promising. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting.

Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, the 2020 Prieure-Lichine offers up notes of fresh redcurrants, blackcurrant pastilles, boysenberries and dried Provence herbs, plus wafts of tobacco leaf and pencil shavings. Medium-bodied, the palate delivers a great intensity of pure black and red fruit flavors, framed by grainy tannins and a lively backbone, finishing long with a refreshing herbal lift.

Tasted blind. Black core with purplish rim. Deep, dark fruit with lots of peppery spice. Really scented, too, with violets. Juicy core inside the firm, dry, subtle, smooth tannins. Lovely balance and nicely dry finish. (JH)
