The 2020 Dame de Montrose does not quite have the horsepower of its peers on the nose quite floral and Margaux-like though it is nicely defined. The palate is medium-bodied with a ripe, sweet entry. Marmalade- and licorice-infused black fruit lead to a sinewy, slightly blocky finish. It just lacks a bit of finesse, though for a Deuxieme Vin? No complaints. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting.

49% Merlot, 44% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Petit Verdot and 3% Cabernet Franc. I had a spare glass so thought I would compare the grand vin with this second wine in 2020. Blackish purple - very deep coloured! Mulberry nose - very accessible, with less obvious tannin than in most grands vins. Just very slightly sour on the end with a hint of tarriness. But well made and it might even be reasonably priced. (JR)
