The 2020 Le Petit Cheval is a little simplistic compared to its peers in this flight, with black fruit and graphite notes, but it lacks nuance. The palate is medium-bodied with soft tannins; it's fleshy but needs more grip. This seems to be a wine predesigned to be approachable, and in that sense, it fulfills its purpose. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting.

This second bottle seemed much fresher and in better condition (the first had seemed raisined and possibly oxidised). Tasted blind. Black core. Dark-fruited and oaky/charry on the nose. Smells dense and on the palate, it proves to be so. Savoury and charry, the fruit well hidden by the tannins and the oak. A savoury wine with a suggestion of greater elegance to come. (JH)
