The 2022 Volnay Les Champans 1er Cru offers darker fruit on the nose than the Fremiets - blackcurrant and raspberry, a little more floral in style. The medium-bodied palate has a sappy entry and more depth than the Fremiets, with a bit of tension on the finish and a dab of white pepper on the aftertaste. Give this 3-4 years in bottle.

Cask sample. Mid crimson. Open and fragrant with dark-red fruit. Tannins are firmer and chalkier here than on the Vieilles Vignes but not sure it is worth the big step up in price, though it might well live longer and it does have more depth. (JH)
