2022 Vieux Chateau Certan, Pomerol 6x75cl

The historic estate of Vieux Château Certan can date its history back to the 1700s, however it was in 1924, when purchased by Georges Thienpont, that it began to blossom into what we know today. A wine merchant in his own right, it was Thienpont who propelled Certan’s reputation. Today the Thienpont family continue Georges’ legacy, through creating outstanding Pomerol wines that are typified by full-bodied, rich dark fruit flavours and silken textures. Its current 14 hectare vineyard is planted with Merlot (c.65), Cabernet Franc (c.30%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (c.5%). Their vines average 50 years, however one bizarre plot of Merlot dates back to 1948, making it one of the oldest in the appellation. Its terroir comprises clay, gravel and sandy soils, however its Petrus-bordering vines benefit from lots of blue clay. The final blend is aged in 50% French oak barrels for 20 months.
