The 2023 Volnay Les Champans 1er Cru has a little more ripeness on the nose than the Fremiets, with baked red cherry, blood orange and light figgy scents. This has just a scintilla of sur-maturité. The palate is medium-bodied, quite structured and firm in the mouth with sappy red fruit, grippy tannins and a Pommard-like finish. It will require three or four years just to shave its edges.

Cask sample. Mid cherry red. Open, scented and sweet-fruited. Drier than I expected on the palate. A bit severe at the moment, may improve when bottled and settled. (JH)
